It wants to add a helper to let you remote into your own Mac, if you skip.![]() Combine this with Keynote’s ability to record a presentation, and you can craft a dynamic presentation that integrates your image when it makes sense. They’re croppable and can be layered above or below other objects on a slide. This means you can present via a Keynote deck and include yourself in the presentation when necessary, and leave yourself out the rest of the time, letting you be the director of your own presentation if you’re screen-sharing with others. Video objects can be added to individual slides as regular objects, which means they can appear and disappear across slides and be a part of transitions between slides. You’ll need to bring your own device frames, though. On Tuesday Apple released version 11.2 of its iWork app suite, featuring new versions of Keynote, Pages, and Numbers.Your mileage may vary, but my favorite updates are in Keynote, which has added support for live video on slides—from cameras or (on the Mac) from device screen captures. —Linked by Jason SnellIWork comes alive with Keynote live-video featuresKeynote will let you place live camera (left) and device screen capture (right, Mac only) on slides as standard objects. There’s also a new chart type, Radar. And as for Pages users, look, I don’t pretend to understand you. (There’s a new Play Multi-Presenter Slideshow menu option if you just start a slideshow normally, there’s no chance of an iCloud collaborator jumping in and stealing the clicker from you.)I’m less excited about the updates to Numbers and Pages, but people who prefer to use Apple’s spreadsheet app to crunch serious numbers might be thrilled that the app now supports pivot tables, a classic Microsoft Excel feature that helps summarize data in large spreadsheets. When a presentation is shared in iCloud, the users of that presentation can take control of the presentation when it’s their turn, and control the flow of the presentation, advancing slides at their leisure. It would sure make everyone’s presentations better if Keynote did this work for us.Another new feature in Keynote that will be welcomed by those who give presentations as part of a group is the Multi-Presenter Slideshow. Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t provide an option to frame screen captures in device images—you’d think they’d have those image files laying around at Apple HQ!—so it will be up to the rest of us to find or create those images. For these early adopters, OS X was a glimpse into the future—the rest of us just sat back and waited for the future to arrive.Apple’s new version of the OS, Mac OS X 10.1, is what we’ve been waiting for. But even Apple admits that OS X’s previous incarnations—from last year’s beta to this spring’s first “final” release—were only for people who wanted to experiment with and explore the operating system’s new features. But OS X 10.1, while not exactly speedy, was usable enough to get by:The Mac community has been buzzing about Mac OS X for years. During that era, I had my Mac set to dual boot, so I could return to OS 9 to get work done. I remember writing this article under the redwood tree in my backyard—the same place I wrote my iPad mini review earlier this week.Mac OS X 10.0 was interesting, but so slow as to be essentially unusable. Much better. It was 20 years ago that I reviewed Mac OS X 10.1 for Macworld. Onenote 2016 for mac not loading for sign inThose of us who review iPhones are, for understandable reasons, focused on what’s new between this year’s model and the last. The problem is that most people don’t buy a new iPhone every year. —Linked by Jason SnellWhen it comes to iPhone upgrades, Apple is incremental. This version combines much of OS 9’s functionality with a collection of improvements that make upgrading to OS X a serious possibility for even dyed-in-the-wool devotees of the classic Mac OS.Hat tip to Stephen Hackett for reminding me of the anniversary, and for linking to Siracusa’s review. I bought one and have used it for a year, and I like it! But this year, Apple has revised the wallet to add a new feature: Find My support. The new wallet features a secure NFC chip which enables support for Find My. The iPhone 13 mini is also a great option for those who prefer a smaller phone with all the same power as the larger iPhone 13.Continue reading “The iPhone 13: An upgrader’s guide”…Inside the iPhone Leather Wallet (second generation)In 2020, Apple sold an iPhone Leather Wallet that attached via MagSafe and held three credit cards. I’ve simplified matter a little—if you own a “plus” or “max” model of iPhone, obviously your phone will be a little larger, and you may want to consider the direct upgrade to the iPhone 13 Pro Max to continue with your large phone. But reviews of the new iPhones will not address what happened in 2018, or 2019, or 2020.Here’s an attempt to provide a little more of a big-picture overview for owners of older iPhones who are wondering what’s new in the iPhone 13. For them, several years of Apple innovations will be rolled into a single purchase. ![]() But it will warn you if your wallet comes detached, and it will tell you the most important thing you need to know when you need to find a lost object: where you (or your iPhone) saw it last. The A15 is plenty fast, but its true power is versatilityLast week, Apple announced the new A15 processor in a peculiar way: by comparing its new chip to the Android competition, rather than the A14 that powered last year’s generation of iPhones. No, it doesn’t make the wallet into an AirTag—if your wallet falls off your phone and then someone comes and picks it up, you can’t locate it. This is not generally a feature Apple likes to talk about, so we may never know.In any event, I think this feature is a pretty good one. Perhaps the old wallet’s NFC chip doesn’t provide a unique identifier for each wallet, or perhaps the old wallet just didn’t provide a reliable enough experience and so Apple shut down the feature until they could do a better job with it. If you choose to allow someone who finds your wallet to view your phone number, Apple’s essentially allowing their phones to look up the number associated with your iCloud account. What I’m wondering is, why did this feature not exist in the first-generation wallet? I’m pretty sure the old wallet has an NFC chip, because it knows the color of the wallet when you attach it for the first time—a trick the new wallet also performs.
